It is an opportunity to take an exciting trip to a number of lovely towns that, with their lights and decorations, take on a magical atmosphere that makes them truly enchanting in this period of the year.
Here are our suggestions for unforgettable trips:
Markets in Vienna, Austria (until 24/12)
The markets fill the city, extending from Maria Theresien Platz to Karlsplatz, without forgetting Piazza Freyung and the Belvedere Castle. The large Christmas tree with its impressive Advent wreath awaits you in Rathausplatz.
Chriskindelsmarik in Strasbourg, France (28/11 – 31/12)
The market, literally Chriskindelsmarik (the Holy Child's market), has been an annual event near the Strasbourg Cathedral since long ago in around 1570. Since that time and up until today it has kept all of its charm intact, with its stalls displaying handcrafted objects and local products.
Striezelmarkt in Dresden, Germany (27/11 - 24/12/2014)
This is the right year to visit Dresden's market, Striezelmarkt, which is celebrating its 580th anniversary. The Altmarkt square has in fact been home to this event since 1434. Over 250 stalls extend over one kilometre, offering the city the warmth and magic of Christmas.
The markets in Basel, Switzerland 27/11 - 23/12)
You can choose between two markets held in two different squares in this Swiss city: on Barfusserplatz and on Münsterplatz. The latter is in the proximity of the Cathedral and a magnificent tree that is the largest in the country. If in doubt, visit them both!
The Skansen markets in Stockholm, Sweden (every weekend from 29 November to 21 December)
Don't let the cold and few hours of sunlight that distinguish days in Sweden scare you. Stockholm's atmosphere and the characteristic Skansen markets in the Djurgarden area upstage everything else. The perfect location to get ready for the holidays.
Naisten Joulumessut in Helsinki, Finland (3-7/12/2014)
If you are looking for something special and unique, the Naisten Joulumessut market in Helsinki is just right for you. It is an all-female market held at the Wanha Satama Conference Center that becomes the home of craftswomen coming from all over Finland for one week. It is an appointment not to miss out on to get a close-up look at this totally Finnish form of production.
The markets in Bolzano, Italy (27/11 - 06/01)
The Christmas market in Bolzano, in the Alto Adige area, is Italy's largest. Every year thousands of visitors go there, attracted by the atmosphere enveloping the town during this period of the year.
